Secrets of Scorpius: Unveiling the Mystical Myths and Legends

Confession and Purpose

Hi Reader, if you have read any of my previous blogs here you already know what I'm about to say. So feel free to skip. If you are new, I'll repeat it. let me make an honest confession, this blog will not educate you with any extraordinary information about space that is not already out there. Neither am I an expert in this field with years of dedication. So what is this blog about??? Merely a digital journal of my observations over 9-10 hours of googling on the subject. So the purpose is just to document my observations.

What's the topic and why I picked it

Now this is the second article in my blog series on the Scorpius constellation. I was supposed to continue covering the stars in the constellation but for some reason, it made more sense to put that on hold and do myths and legends around it. Now why that made sense, I have no clue. But do feel free to draw your own interpretation. It's a free world, at least where I am.  So what good is a truth if it doesn't dance with rumours? For me myths are rumours, waiting to be either validated as the truth or rejected as a lie. I can't help but wonder if we really want our myths to be rejected tho? I know I don't. So i'll leave you with that thought and move forward with this article.

Orion and Scorpion Mythology

When looking around I saw my initial hope of finding a couple of short legends turn into excitement when I saw there is more to uncover. As always first one to pop up was the green mythology of Orion and Scorpion. even here there are multiple versions, I'll share the ones I found with you.

Version 1

Now Orion is a set of stars, which I would love to read more on. But for now, we are talking mythology. So as per Greek mythology, Orion was this gigantic supernatural hunter. His parents were Euryale and Poseidon. Now Orion loved to claim that he could kill all animals of the world if he wished to. Giaia the protector of earth went all paranoid about this. Worried she thought she had to do something to stop this. If you ask me she definitely over-reacted. Anyway now to stop this she sent (wait for the drumroll) - Scorpion to kill Orion. I can't help but wonder how they came up with this myth. I mean to kill someone just because you don't like what they say. In whichever era this was written it was probably a norm. So the scorpion went on to sting Orion on the heel. After this Giaia took pity on Orion (yeah right now you feel bad!) and placed him in the sky as a constellation (does not fucking make up for killing someone but whatever). She also placed Scorpion (who was placed as a constellation as reward for winning battle against Orion) on the opposite end so they do not fight (you started this woman). You know I have to stop and wonder how in so many ancient mythologies women are given the role of the one who started a fight. I am reminded of the Battle of Trojan. I mean if it's Zeus he would have gone himself, but since it's Giaia she sends someone. Not sure if this thing is a representation of misogyny prevalent in ancient times. So back to the myth, now as the scorpion rises orion sets and as the orion rises scorpion sets. And that way they never really meet each other. Scorpios and Orion are never seen together.

Version 2

Now in another version Artemis and Leto (Both females again, do you see what i meant earlier) sent Scorpion to battle Orion after he boasted he could kill all animals on Earth. Zeus noticed this and placed them both as a constellation as a reminder to mortals' cost of pride. I don't really understand why Scorpion is getting fucked in these versions along with Orion. Seems like more of a reminder to mind your own business to me.

Version 3

Ok, this one broke my heart. Over here Giaia sent Scorpion and he killed Orion. Now some dude called Asclepius grounds the scorpion under his foot and brings Orion back to life thanks to some herbal healings. Hades alarmed by this persuades Zeus to kill Asclepius. After this Zeus feels bad (dude these guys just randomly kill people and feel bad) and places him in Serpens constellation. WTF this is absurd. And I couldn't find what but someone placed a scorpion under Serpens constellation as if he is under their foot.

Conclusion

At this point I feel like I am rushing through stuff, so will continue in the next blog. If you are reading this still, do you feel bad for Scorpion like I do? maybe we all have been there like Scorpion. Doing someone else's dirty work and being rewarded with almost nothing!
